Confirmed as heading back to the pro ranks after a year and a half on the sidelines, John Lee Augustyn has said that he is optimistic that he can be in good racing form in 2014.

Stage 16 of the 2008 Tour de France saw John-Lee Augustyn crest the Col de la Bonette in first place then spectacularly overshoot a hairpin bend on the descent. He was thrown from his bike, sliding 30 metres down the shale mountainside before recovering to complete the stage.

A crash in 2007 has come back to haunt John Lee Augustyn and has forced him out of the first half of the season. The South African broke the head of his femur when he fell during a rainy time trial stage in the 2007 Tour of Portugal.

John Lee Augustyn is probably best known outside of the Aftrican continent for his head-first lunge down the scree slopes of the Col de la Bonette-Restefond descent to Jausiers in the Tour de France a couple of years ago, and this after leading the race over it's summit in glorious solitude.

As John-Lee Augustyn was descending the Bonette-Restefond on Stage 16 of the 2008 Tour the 22 year-old from Port Elizabeth - still on a ‘high’ from having topped the col in first place – disappeared over the edge.

Young South African John-Lee Augustyn is riding his first Tour de France, and living this experience with a lot of enthusiasm. On the Pyrenees he kept the pace with the strongest, even attacking on the Tourmalet.
