SAANICH - It's one thing to meet your sports heroes in person, it's another thing to have them show up at your house on your birthday.

Saanich cycling enthusiast Mike Harle received the birthday surprise of a lifetime when he opened the door to find Tour de France hero Ryder Hesjedal waiting on his doorstep.

Harle's friends had made a donation in his name to Hesjedal's charity The Wheelmen, and to say thanks Ryder and friends took Harle on a 65th birthday spin.

The Wheelmen strives to engage Vancouver Island youth in the sport of cycling.
