The ultimate underdogs, Cobo had considered giving up cycling just months before delivering the ride of his life on the famed Angliru's 22% grade aboard his Fuji Altamira, brilliantly defending the red jersey after his epic Stage 15 win, and ascending the podium as the champion of his native Spain's grand tour. GEOX-TMC's season had been defined by the Tour de France snub, but on September 11, 2011, the team and its new leader, Cobo, took their rightful spot on top.
