Alberto Contador se convirtió en el 13º español que viste la maglia rosa del Giro, al término de la etapa reina, en la que pasó un mal momento en Giau (a 65 km), pero supo rehacerse. Quedó sexto en la Marmolada y es líder con 33 segundos de ventaja.
