Whilst the British season takes a little longer to get going, for the riders in the European pro teams, the season is upon us already and Russell Downing of Cult Energy Pro Cycling has two races under his wheels already.

I much prefer stage racing and classic.

His name featured in a recent press release we received from the Luxembourg/Danish Continental squad Cult, they're going Pro Continental for 2015 and yes, Mr. Downing is on board. Time to have another word with the man, whose done it all from madisons to the Giro, from the team pursuit to Flanders, from Linda McCartney to Sky.

Yesterday (Thursday), Russell Downing learnt that the races he has loved watching on TV for many many years, are now part of his race schedule in the coming weeks. Not just any races but quite possibly the biggest single day races in the whole of the racing calendar; the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

The news gets better for NetApp-Endura with wildcard invitations for classics such as Amstel Gold, Paris-Roubaix and now Tour of Flanders. One rider covering a lot of miles over a lot of hills and bouncing over a lot of cobbles, is Russell Downing.

After being let down by team Sky in 2011, Russell Downing is looking to return to the winner’s podium in 2012 with Endura Racing Speaking to the Rotherham rider this week he says he’s grateful to Endura Racing for bringing him into their team when contracts were tight and he’s far from ready to retire like many riders have after losing a spot in a pro team. Russell says that the race programme is looking pretty good although there may be changes if some races like the Tour of Med don’t happen. “We have the training camp in January after the team launch (London Bike Show) and then may be a few races in Majorca and then the Tour of Med, Haut Var etc in France.”

In 2005, Russell Downing scored the biggest win of his career, winning the British road championship. With his new stripes on his back, the then 28 year-old Downing was ready for the big-time contracts to roll in. However, the ProTour teams did not beat a path to his door.

Russell Downing will soon be winging his way down under to compete for England in the Commonwealth Games road race. Russell had one of, if not the best season ever last year topped off by beating Steve Cummings to the line for the British Road Race title.
