The 29 year old Czech rider was previously part of the squad between 2011 and 2014, competing under the Team NetApp-Endura colours. He then moved to Team Sky and spent two years there, helping riders such as Chris Froome to success but also learning much and gaining strength.

SKY is the right team for me.

Leopold König began the year with high hopes and a good form, but his Spring goals were hammered by a knee injury because of which me missed two months of racing. The 27-year-old rider came back in late April and soon afterwards finished 4th in the Bayern Rundfahrt, a result that gave him confidence that he will get into top shape for the start of the Tour de France.

The future is bright…

In stage 13, we saw an impressive ride from NetApp-Endura’s GC man, Leopold Konig, the Czech who is riding his first Tour de France as part of the German wild-card team. The 26-year-old won a stage of the Vuelta a Espańa in 2013 and finished ninth overall. Now the hope is for a top-10 in Le Tour.

It’s been a frustrating season for Leo. Having burst onto the major scene in 2013, with a stage win and 9th place in the Vuelta, he hoped to take 2014 by storm. Unfortunately, bad luck and injury have stopped this from happening.

I want a top 10 finish and a stage win in the Tour de France.

He started with ice hockey at a very young age and then, when he was 12, discovered mountain biking as an excellent preparation for the winter season. Even if he had serious potential in ice hockey, Leopold König decided to switch his focus to road cycling at the age of 14 and he has no reason whatsoever to regret that decision.

What a 2013 for the 26 year old Czech rider. In his 2nd season for Team NetApp-Endura he exceeded all expectations with an amazing stage win in the Vuelta and 9th place on GC. It really put his team on the map and made them favourite to land an invite to the Tour de France in 2014.

Now other riders know they have to look out for us.

Up until Stage Eight of the 2013 Vuelta, the Czech Republic's 25 year-old Leo Konig (NetApp-Endura) was best known as the winner earlier this year of the Queen Stage in the United States’ biggest race, the Tour of California. But his successes are no surprise to those who knew Konig’s previous palmares; especially his GC win in the notoriously hilly 2010 Tour of Austria. Konig turned pro with Czech Continental team PSK Whirlpool in 2006 and would stay with the team until the end of 2010.

Not all the glory in the Tour of California belonged to Tejay van Garderen and Peter Sagan; winner of the Queen Stage in the United States’ biggest race was 25 year-old Leopold Konig (Team NetApp – Endura). But it was no surprise to those who knew Konig’s palmares; especially his GC win in the notoriously hilly 2010 Tour of Austria.
