Freddy Maertens is een groot kampioen. Twee wereldtitels, drie groene truien en vijftien ritten in de Tour, één Vuelta die hij domineerde van start tot finish. Maar de West-Vlaming, vandaag 65, kende ook diepe dalen. Geldzorgen in de eerste plaats. Heroïek en tragiek gaan vaak hand in hand. Dat symboliseert Maertens als geen ander.

"Il mondo è cambiato e il ciclismo, giustamente, lo ha seguito. Paesi come Cina e Qatar sono mercati importanti ma il cuore del ciclismo deve restare in Europa". Le parole sono quelle di Freddy Maertens: braccialetto giallo "Livestrong" al polso, sciarpa al collo, vestito gessato elegante ma giovanile.

Today Freddy Maertens works at the Centrum Ronde Van Vlaanderen museum in Oudenaarde, Belgium, and there I sat down with Maertens joined by my wife Carol, writer Les Woodland and his wife Stephanie to spend a couple of hours going over his fabulous career. On a personal note, I found him to be a fun, charming man who has given his own career and cycle racing in general a lot of thought.
