In 2005, Nico Mattan grabbed victory in one of the most controversial editions of Gent – Wevelgem ever held. The newspapers ran and ran with it, but Sean Kelly saw, “no problems” with the result. Ed Hood caught-up with the charismatic Belgian to hear Mattan’s version of that still-debated day.

We hangen aan de toog van een Roeselaars café. “Doe jij de Kwaremont nog?” vraagt iemand. “Het bier wel, bergop niet meer”, antwoordt mijn gesprekspartner droog. Ik heb afspraak met Nico Mattan, voormalig meesterknecht en bad boy van het peloton. Eerst een pint, dan een interview, is zijn voorwaarde. Een kenner van de geneugten.

Vainqueur du Gand-Wevelgem en 2005, le Grand Prix de Plouay en 2001 ou encore les Trois Jours de La Panne la même année, le coureur belge Nico Mattan a mis un terme à sa carrière. La saison prochaine, Mattan deviendra l'un des directeurs sportifs de l'équipe britannique DFL-Cyclingnews.
