Allan Davis has a fine palmarès to his name and rode for some of the biggest teams in the pro peloton from 2001 to 2014. The man from Queensland has just got a new job with Lotto Soudal, so what better time for Ed Hood to catch up for a chat and to look back over his career.

No ha sido fácil el retorno de Allan Davis a Europa. Llegó desde Australia pocos días antes del inicio del Tour del Mediterráneo y pasó «de los 40 grados que hacía en mi país al frío, la nieve y la lluvia. ¡Hemos estado algunos días a cuatro bajo cero! Todo muy extremo. Lo he pasado muy mal en Francia con ese tiempo. Entre que llevo la preparación más retrasada que otros años y lo que nos cayó encima he terminado casi enfermo. No sé todavía ni cómo estoy. ¡Qué frío!»

Allan Davis' return to the fold of pro cycling and the Quick Step team paid dividends in Adelaide as he took out the Tour Down Under. Some hiccups in the past should fade into insignificance for this Classics contender in 2009.

Aussie sprinter Allan Davis has had a turbulent 12 months. Sidelined in July 2006 after being swept up in the Operacion Puerto tornado, he returned home to Australia in order to weigh up his options, but in October last year he was cleared to race by his national federation.

Yes Mate – Spanish, Basque and plenty of Liberty ’Yes mate’ is a typical Australian phrase that peppers the spoken language. The Liberty Seguros rider's Australian dialect was a perfect foil to my London cockney slang. But all accents aside, we understood each other perfectly to discuss his life as a pro bike racer...
