At the end of 2013, Michael Creed signed Zach Bell to race for Team SmartStop for the 2014 season, little did he know that Zach would fully encompass the work ethics and dedication that he was looking to instill into his new team. This year Zach has taken on the role as the team captain and has been a great mentor and teammate to the younger members of the team.

The last time we caught up with Canada’s Zach Bell (Champion System) was just after he’d won stage Four of the UCI 2.1 Tour de Taiwan, back in the spring. Since then he’s been busy; collecting another stage in a Far Eastern race – the Tour of Korea – and pulling on the maple leaf jersey of Canadian Elite Road Race Champion. Prior to that Taiwan stage, Bell’s last international road win was in his breakthrough year of 2007, riding for the Symmetrics team, with stage wins in the Vuelta a El Salvador and Delta Tour in Canada, plus the overall GC in the latter.

Track riding at the Olympics, road riding at the highest level and even wrestling – Zach Bell has certainly done it all. After being picked up by Champion System following on from SpiderTech’s withdrawal, Zach has recently repaid the multinational squad with a great stage win at the Tour de Taiwan. What better time than now then to catch up with the likeable Canadian.

Canadian track star Zach Bell is having a great season on the road taking another important North American race win. In May it was the Bank of America Wilmington Grand Prix. This time the race was both more difficult and more prestigious – the 50th annual Fitchburg Longsjo Classic.

Zach Bell won gold in the men’s Scratch race at the Track World Cup in Cali, Colombia in dramatic fashion on Friday (Dec. 12), overcoming a mid-race crash to come back and score Canada’s first World Cup win by a male rider since Curt Harnett in 1996.
