Responding to the debate on Therapeutic Use Exemptions in general and Marcel Kittel’s remarks in particular, Team Novo Nordisk CEO Phil Southerland has called for a more nuanced discussion on TUEs plus a better understanding of the circumstances for diabetics in sport.

Team Type 1 was doing rather nicely with the international results flowing well for their ‘mixed’ team of athletes living with Type 1 diabetes as well as riders those free from the condition. From its inception back in 2006 up until 2012 the team had achieved that little bit more success each season.

Phil Southerland is a team owner like no other. He founded his revolutionary Diabetes awareness team, Team Type 1 team back in 2008, rode in it as a rider before stepping back into the management side of things and now this year took the brave step of changing his successful team of International non-diabetic and diabetic team into a 100% diabetic team, Novo Nordisk. We recently caught up with Phil to talk about how he saw season 2013.

Stage 3 of the Tour of California from San José to Modesto was an uncomfortably wet and cold day in the saddle for the riders. It was also the end of the race for Phil Southerland (Team Type 1), disqualified for “holding onto team cars for an extended period of time”

For Team Type 1 co-founder and professional cyclist Phil Southerland was faced with many unknowns before starting the 2009 Amgen Tour of California. Not only had he never raced at this level but as a Type 1 diabetic, he had never put his body through this high intensity 8-day of racing.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at seven months old, Phil Southerland will be racing with his Team Type 1 squad at the Tour of California. Phil and team co-founder Joe Eldridge have a goal: to take Team Type 1 to professional cycling’s greatest race, the Tour de France, by the year 2012.
