Annoncé comme le grand rival de Tom Dumoulin au départ de ce Championnat du Monde Elites contre-la-montre à Innsbruck, l’Australien Rohan Dennis a finalement réussi à faire tomber le tenant du titre, après une performance époustouflante, qui l’a vu repousser le Néerlandais de plus d’une minute.

Rohan Dennis has made no bones about the fact that he wants to win the Santos Tour Down Under for a second consecutive season and put himself in the history books. In an interview on Tuesday, the BMC rider said that he’s on winning form and that his BMC team’s advantage is that they have two cards to play with Richie Porte.

Once the London Olympics were over Rohan Dennis vowed that his track racing days are over. That’s true… to an extent. On 8 January he’ll return to the velodrome to take on the hour record. It’s a race against time. How far can he go in this prestigious competition that’s only result classification is an honour roll? The need to tweet some news a few days earlier than had been agreed cost Rohan Dennis some money but the news is now out: the 24-year-old has transferred from Garmin-Sharp to BMC Racing. The mid-season team swap sets a precedent but, according to the rider himself, the parties involved are happy with the arrangement.

According to the official release about the elite men’s time trial at the 2014 national championships: “South Australian Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp) crashed out of the race after a strong wind gust knocked him to the ground. Dennis is expected to line up for Sunday men’s road race on January 12.”

In a season that began with a last-minute withdrawal from his hometown WorldTour race – before it began – because of viral meningitis, Rohan Dennis would go on to surpass even his ambitious expectations. The 23-year-old went to the London Olympics as a track rider but he is now a full-time road cycling professional. It took a while for him to find the right place to show off his abilities – and stunning pedalling action – but he has settled in to the environment offered by the Garmin-Sharp team. He recovered from the illness while fretting that he might have been forced to waste opportunity presented to him by Jonathan Vaughters and the Slipstream team and eventually started to rack up a few good results.

South Australian Rohan Dennis defied atrocious weather over the five days of the GMHBA Tour of Geelong to score a clear-cut victory. Billed as a rising star of Australian cycling, the Jayco Skins rider is in the national under-23 squad for the world road championships next month.
