A headwind in the finishing straight served Caleb Ewan well in Lyndoch: he jumps off the wheels of his lead-out men, tucks down low, turns on the turbo and off he goes… ahead and over the line for the win. Twice in three days, the Orica-GreenEdge sprinter has won a race in the manner that’s expected of him.

The Friday before the Tour is press conference day. At the end of the formalities for Orica-GreenEdge’s moment on the stage, Daryl Impey spoke about the team, his tasks for the coming three weeks and reflected on his absence from the race last year.

Daryl Impey started riding in 1997 with his dad and brother. He signed his first pro contract a few years later for a South African- based Microsoft Cycling Team. Shortly after, Impey made the move to Europe and soon got picked up by Team Barloworld.

For many, Daryl Impey might be best remembered as the man who was cruising to overall victory in the last stage of the 2009 Presidential Tour of Turkey when Theo Bos decided that the South African Barloworld rider might like a closer look at the barriers lining the finish straight.

Back in early May, Daryl Impey was lying in a hospital bed in South Africa after a horrific crash within sight of the finish of the last stage of the Tour of Turkey – with the yellow jersey on his back! Things have taken a very positive turn of late though
