Life on civvy street

Cyclist, James Witts, 23 September 2016

Forced to retire in February 2016 with a heart condition, Mick Rogers was one of the peloton’s most diligent and tactically astute riders.

The decision was not rushed and it is one that Michael Rogers wished he didn’t have to make but ultimately the call had to be made: stop racing. One of the true stars of Australian cycling has been forced to retire…

Rogers on Basso and Contador

The Tinkoff-Saxo team had things other than bike racing on its mind since yesterday morning; concern for the well-being of Ivan Basso was the prevalent theme of the first rest day of the 2015 Tour de France. While the 10th stage of the race was being contested, the team issued a statement about the Italian’s consultation in relation to his diagnosis of testicular cancer.

Interview part II: Tinkov’s Grand Tour challenge, personal goals and more

Although Alberto Contador crashed out of the Tour de France and was thus unable to fight for what was the team’s biggest season goal, overall victory in the race, Tinkoff Saxo nevertheless had a very strong Grand Tour campaign during 2014.

Interview part I: how the clenbuterol case made me a better rider.

Sidelined for several months this season as a result of his positive test for clenbuterol at last year’s Japan Cup, Tinkoff Saxo rider Mick Rogers has said that while his suspension – later reversed by the UCI – was a very stressful period, that it ultimately made him a much better rider.

Alberto, no apologies. You’ve done us proud…

With about 94km to go in the 10th stage of the 101st Tour de France, the two-time champion, Alberto Contador landed with a thud on the ground. He would later discover that his tibia was broken in the incident but that didn’t mean he’d surrender and quit the race immediately. As one of the favourites for the overall title, he got himself bandaged up, switched shoes and got back on the bike. Eighteen kilometres later, the Spaniard would put his arm around his Australian team-mate, Mick Rogers, and apologise. “‘Sorry,” he said, “I can’t keep going.” And with that, Contador unclipped from his pedals, stepped off his bike and quit the Tour de France. His race was over.

The Giro. That’s the plan…

Last week in an exclusive interview with Mick Rogers many topics were raised. He had just returned to his home in Switzerland after his first race since being cleared to compete again by the UCI. One early question was: Do you know if you’re going to the Giro?

Rogers: “My goal is to ride the Tour de France…”

On the afternoon of 18 December 2013, two days before Michael Rogers turned 34, he was a professional cyclist employed by the Saxo-Tinkoff team. It was the end of another successful season, his 14th as a pro, and he had taken his daughters to their swimming lessons near his European base in Mendrisio, Switzerland. He took his jacket off and enjoyed being able to watch his girls in the pool. When it was time to leave, he found his phone in the pocket and saw that he’d missed six calls from a Swiss number he didn’t recognise. He retrieved his voicemails and heard news that would destroy his reputation. “Positive.” “Clenbuterol.”

This is the time!

Towards the end of stage 13, two riders nodded at each other: ideal conditions were presented to the Saxo-Tinkoff team and Mick Rogers and Daniele Bennati realised the time was right to create some havoc. When the Australian was on the massage table a few hours after the stage, we spoke to him to get a first-hand perspective of what happened on the road to Saint-Amand-Montrond on the second Friday of the 100th Tour de France. Here is a transcript of that discussion…

On the Thursday before the 100th Tour de France, Saxo-Tinkoff held a press conference at the team hotel in Porto Vecchio. While Alberto Contador spoke in a room full of media, Rob Arnold and Michael Rogers sat outside and had a chat about how the Australian has prepared for the Tour, the differences between his 2013 team and the Sky outfit he raced the Tour with in 2012… and what he expects from the race this year. Here is a transcript of that exchange.
