It’s not easy being an old guy in today’s cycling world of 10 grand bikes, 300 Euro shoes, through-axles, rotor diameters, a dozen sprockets, electric gears… and ‘Zwift.’ But unless we wish to be tagged ‘dinosaur’ we have to keep up. Fortunately, I used to be runner in the Six Day world for former World Scratch and Madison Champion, rapid roadman sprinter, not to mention Berlin, Bremen, Copenhagen, Gent and Grenoble Six Day winner, Denmark’s Alex Rasmussen.

Danish rider hoping to develop rhythm with Garmin-Barracuda sprinter Garmin-Barracuda signed Alex Rasmussen to help eat up long, flat kilometers, to ride a solid time trial, and eventually to help lead out its sprint star Tyler Farrar. Rasmussen knows his role will be key, and he says that how well he develops with Farrar could decide whether he is selected for some of the season’s biggest races.

One of the surprises of the 2011 Giro was the ride HTC-Highroad’s Alex Rasmussen produced in the final stage time trial in Milan. Despite a puncture in the last kilometre, the big Dane ran a scant seven seconds behind winner and Worlds silver chrono medallist David Millar.

Danish Madison pair Alex Rasmussen and Michael Mørkøv have scored some of their best results this season, and look to be on track for a good result not only in the Manchester World Championships, but the Olympic Games in Beijing as well.
