One of the worst Tour crashes that the rider remounted and finished the stage has to be when Juan Antonio Flecha and Johnny Hoogerland crashed through a barbed wire fence. Ed Hood caught up with Johnny to talk about old times… good and bad.

Johnny Hoogerland staat aan de vooravond van de Amstel Gold Race. De 31-jarige renner uit het Zeeuwse Yerseke kijkt uit naar de enige Nederlandse wielerklassieker op het hoogste niveau. “Gehuld in ons oranje tenue zal ik nog meer dan anders met kippenvel aan de start staan”, glundert de Nederlands kampioen van 2013. In het Weekendinterview blikt hij vooruit op de WorldTour-wedstrijd van zondag.

Dutch champion on the road in 2013 after a wonderful ride, Johnny Hoogerland changed teams last season after the demise of Vacansoleil and signed a one-year contract with Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela, for which he already raced the Gran Premio Costa degli Etruschi, where he finished 19th. Now, Johnny Hoogerland is in the Tour Méditerranéen, but the biggest goals for him this season will come in the Spring, when he’ll ride the one-day races and the Giro.

Johnny Hoogerland surprised many by signing with Androni Giocatolli-Venezuela for the 2014 season but is looking forward to starting a new chapter in his career.

Na vijf jaar Vacansoleil-DCM moest Johnny Hoogerland na het afgelopen seizoen uitkijken naar een nieuwe ploeg. De Nederlandse kampioen kwam wat verrassend terecht bij het Italiaanse Androni Giocattoli - Venezuela.

Half-an-hour down the road from the Saxo press conference is the Vacansoleil 'do'. Vacansoleil is a team which punches above it's weight and whose riders could never be accused of over analysing; 'let's go!' is the Hoogerland and De Gendt philosophy.

Hoogerland voelt zich op zijn plek bij Vacansoleil-DCM. Vooral door het feit dat Vacansoleil-DCM een ProTeam-licentie heeft bemachtigd voor dit seizoen en dus zeker is van de deelname aan grote rondes en klassiekers.

Vacansoleil richt zijn pijlen op het voorjaar. Een van de mannen die moet gaan vlammen is de 25-jarige Johnny Hoogerland. De Zeeuw hoopt zijn goede prestaties van afgelopen seizoen door te trekken en kijkt vooruit naar de toekomst.
